Red Abalone

The seas have not been teeming with Red Abalone for some time. They are one of the most rare types that can be found, even in their primarily native habitat of the coastal waters of Northern California. Despite this fact, free diving devotees regularly pull Red Abalone up from the murky depths on early morning missions when the fog has still yet to unfurl itself from the coast and burn off of the hills.

In 170 million years, the Red Abalone has not managed any better than the rest of the abalone population to develop a defense against humans - the almighty predator. Even sharks have to leave Red Abalone, and every other abalone for the most part, alone. Despite the fact that they could swallow a number of them whole, the shells would undoubtedly do some kind of damage to their digestive systems, and they can't be good for their teeth either. We actually are in more danger while we're in the water looking for Red Abalone than they are in from us. We can only take home three, but there is no limit on humans.
